BBI WAS DISCOVERED BY DR. D. E. BOWMAN (UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO) AND DR. Y. BIRK (WEIZMANN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE, ISRAEL)— TWO PIONEERS IN PROTEIN BIOCHEMISTRY. THE MOLECULE WAS LATER NAMED BOWMAN–BIRK INHIBITOR IN HONOUR OF BOTH SCIENTISTS.

IT IS A NATURAL PROTECTIVE MOLECULE FOUND IN SOYBEANS AND LEGUMES, NOT A SYNTHETIC INVENTION. LATER RESEARCH FROM UCLA HIGHLIGHTED ITS STRONG CELLULAR PROTECTION EFFECTS CAUSED BY IRRITANTS.
